Hi:

I have to read PDF documents for work. Problem is, they're scanned documents, so they show up as images, not text. I updated my Adobe to version 10. Can I use Kurzweil 100 version 12 to scan them, if not, any other suggestions? Could I just save to text? Any info would be great.

If the text is in an image, I dont see how that would work.
Jaws would see it as an immage, as well as adobe and , kurzwiel.
As far as I know there is no way for anything to read text that is inside a picture.
Someone correct me if i am wrong

Hi

The beta version of Jaws 13 has built in OCR so it can read text inside a picture.
That being said, I have been extremely busy, and havenot had a chance to try this out yet.
Anyone with a Jaws 12 license can download and test Jaws 13.
Your only other optionis another type of OCR software, such as Kurzweil. Screen readers do not understand pictures, even pictures with text, an OCR must be performed to try and extract that text. I beleive Adobe can perform its own OCR, so those who make the PDF file should be able to extract the text in that process, or try to, depending on what software they have.
Check www.adobe.com/accessibility for more info, and check www.freedomscientific.com for the Jaws 13 beta download

Kurzweil will read them. I do it all the time. Just open the file from within Kurzweil and it will automatically scan and read it.

Okay, so how do I open a PdF file in Kurzweil 1000? Each time I open a scanned PDF, Jaws just says "alert, empty document". A lot of these files are attached, and are in a database. Any specific instructions on how to save then read with Kurzweil would be great. What is a beta download. I just got Jaws 12 in April, and I'm sure a couple of updates, but I'd have to check with my Voc Rehab counselor.
Thanks.

Not if its a scan.
Try Jaws 13 it is suppose to solve this issue. Also ask the persons sending you the documents just to send the regular file not a scan? The file is coming from some place?

I think some of the documents are perhaps originals that are scanned into PDF, but I'm not sure on that.

A beta update is a release for development to have people use it and inform the developer about bugs so they can be ironed out before the retail release is given. You can use the beta for a while if you have jaws 1 and do so without removing jaws 12. I would suggest giving it a try, you can always revert back to jaws 12 if you don't like it or don't wish to buy it if you don't have an SMA. Though, if you don't have an SMA, they aren't that expensive and you may want to consider it before the latest Jaws is released since it is cheaper.

To open a PDF using Kurzweil, open said document in Adobe Reader, go to the file menu, then print, then choose the Kurzweil KesiPrint printer. The document will be printed straight through into Kurzweil, where it can be OCR'd. If you don't have KesiPrint, let me know, and I'll see what I can find. I'd test it here, but I don't currently have a copy of the package. Hope this helps.

first save it on to your computer then in kurzweil control O and chose the folder and document, and blah blah blah. yeah, easy as that. but kurzweil can read it but it's poor quality unless its a clean copy. I tried scanning one in to k1200 and it just didn't work right. did the job but a lot of which I couldn't read, anyone know how to clean that mess up? the recognition was low too.

hi.

As brandonmcginty, explained above. The best method is to open the pdf document in adobe and then use the print option, but instead of choosing your normal printer, select the kisi printer. It should then open and be readable.

hope this helps.
